Malaysia to abandon use of English in maths, science lessons

Beginning in 2012, Malaysian students will be taught maths and science in the national Malay language because the use of English is believed to have caused student achievement to decline in those subjects. Officials concerned about the effect that poor English abilities had on Malaysian students searching for jobs decided in 2003 to teach maths and science in English, but have faced protests on the issue recently.
