Alaska launches oil-sector safety review

Alaska's Oil and Gas Conservation Commission has launched a review of its rules for offshore and extended-reach drilling, and it will hold hearings after the cause of the Deepwater Horizon accident in the Gulf of Mexico has been determined. The new rules could affect planned offshore wells designed to drill down and sideways to target gas deposits up to eight miles away from the surface rig. "We want to learn from what has happened in the Gulf to see if we can improve our own requirements," said one of the commissioners.
