API: U.S. must allow deepwater drilling upon compliance with safety rules

The Interior Department should permit oil companies to drill in deep waters if they meet new safety policies for shallow-water drilling, according to the American Petroleum Institute. The rules require producers to ensure they have operational blowout preventers and comply with new guidelines for installing casing. If companies follow these rules, "then they should be permitted to begin operations across the board and maintain the thousands of jobs that are at stake," said Erik Milito, who handles drilling issues for API.
