Better building through chemistry

Construction companies are forging links with the burgeoning green-chemistry sector in order to make their products more sustainable and more competitive. Natural alternatives to such chemicals as urea-formaldehyde and polyvinyl chloride are already helping green builders compete with conventional construction companies, and eco-chemists are seeking industry input to help them figure out where to focus their future research. "They... need to be in a constant dialogue so we as researchers can understand the issues from the front lines of those selling the products," says one chemist.
