Retailers' June sales benefited from the holiday weekends at the beginning and end of the month, but continued budget consciousness by consumers led to deeper-than-usual apparel discounting and uncertainty about the upcoming back-to-school season. "You can see week-to-week differences today that are far more volatile than what we have been seeing," Family Dollar Stores executive R. James Kelly said.
