Ocean-research program gives educator firsthand look at oil spill

Nicolle von der Heyde, who plans to teach eighth-grade science this fall at an underperforming middle school in Missouri, has spent some of her summer vacation at sea as part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Teacher at Sea program, studying the effects of the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. "What I want my students to understand is that we are very much connected to the Gulf, the impact that this will have for decades to come and what we can learn from this tragedy," von der Heyde said.
