The U.K. is creating new products and services via a concept that brings engineers, business and researchers together in sector-specific hubs, similar to Germany's Fraunhofer Institutes. The Scotland-based Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult is one of seven innovation hubs that has been created by the Technology Strategy Board. One of its projects is to improve the reliability and performance of renewable energy. Another hub focuses on high-value manufacturing. "These specialist hubs of innovation harness the creativity of [subject matter experts] and link it into the wider supply chain for their sectors," writes Iain Gray, the board's CEO.
