Expert: Investment in consumer engagement critical to Europe's smart grid success

Europe is making considerable progress in investing in energy efficiency, with 281 smart grid R&D projects and 90 smart metering pilots and rollouts currently underway, but experts say millions more euros will be needed to complete infrastructure upgrades and reach full meter penetration. According to Jan Panek of the European Commission's Energy Directorate, beyond the technical considerations, a successful transition to the smart grid will also require engaging consumers by convincing them of the usefulness of demand response technology and ensuring adequate security.
