Japan bank lending surges in June

Outstanding loans held by Japanese banks were up a sharp 1.9% last month from a year before, marking the biggest gain in nearly four years. The increase was fueled by lending for mortgages and housing as well as overseas investments, suggesting that the Bank of Japan is succeeding in persuading banks to steer away from government bonds.
