Lawmaker to unveil bill to curb Rx drug abuse in Part D

Rep. Frank Pallone Jr., D-N.J., will introduce a bill intended to curb abuse of prescription drugs among Medicare Part D beneficiaries. The measure, which would require plan sponsors to certify that prescriptions for controlled substances were written by a physician, comes after the HHS Office of Inspector General discovered that thousands of drugs prescribed by nonphysicians are paid for by the program. "It's imperative that checks are in place to prevent fraud and abuse as well as to protect patients," Pallone said Monday in a statement.
