Mentors vs. sponsors: How the latter can help with career goals

One key to progressing up the career ladder is finding a sponsor -- someone within your company who will advocate for you, writes Allyson Zimmermann, director of Catalyst Europe. "A sponsor will only champion people who are performing at the highest level and who they are confident will continue to perform at that level," she writes. Women are over-mentored and under-sponsored, Catalyst research reveals, and "while high-potential women actually had more mentors than men, men had access to more senior-level sponsors," Zimmerman writes.
