New MRI technique employs sugar to track tumors

Cancerous tumor cells demand more energy than normal cells, and a new technique takes advantage of the micro-fluctuations in magnetic energy they produce when consuming sugar. The glucoCEST method uses a conventional MRI to track tumors in the presence of "the same sugar content found in half a standard sized chocolate bar," said professor Mark Lythgoe, director of Centre for Advanced Biomedical Imaging at University College London.
