Portland to get first vote on massive I-5 bridge project

After years of wrangling by state and federal officials, the City Council in Portland, Ore., will cast its first public vote today on design plans for a $4.2 billion replacement bridge linking the cities of Portland and Vancouver. Planners envision a 12-lane toll bridge to replace the current six-lane span regarded as one of the major traffic bottlenecks on the West Coast. But city leaders are determined to maintain some control over the project, including design, environmental and mass-transit considerations.
