As of Sept. 8, the federal government will award contracts only to companies that use the E-Verify system to determine their workers' immigration status. In addition, companies that receive stimulus funds must also use E-Verify. However, the government is revoking a provision in the law that sometimes required employers to fire workers whose Social Security numbers did not match those listed in the federal database. Critics of the E-Verify program say it will slow the economic recovery, while supporters say it will help reduce the number of illegal immigrants in the work force.
