NASA backs severe weather forecasting system for pilots

NASA says it will fund a new system to predict severe weather over remote sections of the ocean not covered by radar. The system, designed by scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric Research and the University of Wisconsin, uses satellites and computer modeling to pinpoint areas where severe weather could develop quickly. In-flight testing is expected to begin next year.
