Green builders, designers can learn from old design

Ancient buildings, such as the thousand-year-old cathedrals still standing in many European cities, hold important lessons for modern eco-designers, says civil engineer Vic Perry. Modern design should aim to be less disposable and aimed at finding ways to make sure new buildings are able to last for centuries, Perry said. "History repeatedly shows us that upgrading infrastructure once it is built is an approach that is normally more cost-effective, that reduces the environmental footprint and is more sustainable," he said.
