Pilots union softens tone in negotiations with American Airlines

American Airlines pilots are seeking "healthy dialogue" with management, says the new president of the Allied Pilots Association, signaling a change in tone following a leadership shakeup at the union. "We will work to establish the kind of relationship with American Airlines management that provides for an open exchange of ideas," David Bates said Thursday after taking the reins at the APA, which represents some 11,000 pilots at American. At the same time, he noted, "[o]ur pilots have sacrificed tremendously during the past several years, and those sacrifices must be recognized as part of a new collective bargaining agreement."
