Researchers have developed a 3D printing method that uses room temperature liquid metal to create a figure, wire and tiny letters. The method requires a syringe needle to form shapes from tiny droplets of liquid metal that are held together by a thin, flexible oxide skin, a process that could be used in the production of electronic components. "The thin oxide layer on the surface of the metal allows for the formation of mechanically stable structures strong enough to stand against gravity and the large surface tension of the liquid," according to the published paper.
