APCUs effectively combine palliative and acute care, study finds

Acute palliative care units, mainly managed by palliative specialists, reduce ICU use and are effective and cost-efficient for treating patients with terminal illnesses or advanced chronic conditions, according to a study from Montefiore Medical Center in New York City. The study is to be published in the American Journal of Hospice & Palliative Medicine. "We are creating the future by bringing palliative care units within hospital walls," said researcher Dr. Serife Eti of Beth Israel Medical Center's Department of Pain Medicine and Palliative Care.
