Low participation of minority populations in clinical trials undermines the health care system, says Dr. Bruce Moskowitz, founder of MyClinicalTrialLocator.com. Race and ethnicity may play a role in disease risk as well as drug response, but minorities remain underrepresented in clinical trials, Moskowitz says. Mistrust, lack of insurance, low awareness of clinical trial opportunities, language and health literacy barriers, eligibility criteria that exclude patients with multiple conditions, and other practical considerations keep many minorities from participating in clinical trials.
