The science of sunburn

Sunburn is a toxic reaction to damage from ultraviolet light, says dermatologist Gary Chuang of the Tufts University School of Medicine. Ultraviolet light damages DNA by breaking the bonds between nucleotides, ultimately resulting in cell death. Cells that do not die may instead proliferate as cancer.
