Bell Labs says tech brings fiberlike speeds to copper

Alcatel-Lucent's Bell Labs unit says it's advancing technology that could deliver ultra-high-capacity Internet to the last mile using a combination of fiber and copper wire. XG-Fast -- which is years from commercial availability -- could support data speeds of 10 gigabits per second over short distances of copper, eliminating the need to deploy fiber all the way to customers, the company says.
