Improper government payments reached $100B in 2013

By its own reckoning, the U.S. government made $100 billion in improper payments last year in the form of tax credits and unemployment benefits to people who didn't qualify, and medical payments for unnecessary procedures. Improper payments peaked in 2010, reaching $121 billion. The government has been trying to put controls in place to address this issue. The House Subcommittee on Government Operations is holding a hearing today on the matter.
