CFPB will penalize lenders for debt-collection harassment

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau will fine lenders if they are found to be harassing customers during debt collection on loans they made. In addition, the CFPB says it is opening its consumer complaint system to include debt collection. The new policy extends the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, which generally did not include creditors themselves.
