SEC approves advertising for hedge funds and private offerings

The Securities and Exchange Commission voted 4-1 to eliminate an 80-year-old prohibition on advertising for private offerings. The rule allows hedge funds and companies seeking to raise capital to announce the terms of their offerings to the public but also requires that they take precautions ensuring that only accredited investors -- those with substantial assets and sophisticated knowledge of investing -- purchase the investments.
