FDA: No proof tomatoes fight cancer

There is a lack of evidence a tomato-rich diet or the antioxidant lycopene protects people from cancer, the FDA reports. A November 2005 statement from the agency says, "There is no credible evidence to support qualified health claims for lycopene, as a food ingredient, component or food, or as a dietary supplement and reduced risk of any of the cancers in the petition," and details are spelled out in the Journal of the American Cancer Institute's July 10 issue.
