Energy agency official opposes reducing ethanol requirements

Reducing the renewable fuel standard -- which requires 36 billion gallons of biofuels be mixed into gasoline by 2022 -- would weaken investments in biofuel technology and undo efforts to decrease greenhouse gases and lessen U.S. dependence on oil, Deputy Assistant Energy Secretary Steven Chalk said before the Senate Environment clean air subcommittee. The statement was made as the Bush administration mulls Texas Gov. Rick Perry's proposal to cut the ethanol requirement by 50% this year.
