Government considers taking over Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac

As shares in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac continue to plunge and their problems mount, the Bush administration is considering its options. Senior White House officials are looking into a plan that would have the government take control of Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac -- or both -- and put them in a conservatorship, sources said. Shares of the mortgage giants would be worth little or possibly nothing under the conservatorship.
