Outdated salary system shortchanges experienced teachers

Under the outdated step-based salary system, young teachers can see rapid rises in their salaries while the pay of veteran teachers stalls, writes Mike Reno, a board trustee for a Michigan school district. "This one-size-fits-all system is fundamentally unfair. It's also unsustainable as a business model," Reno writes, adding: "A revamped system should be based on measurable metrics such as student achievement and mentoring, as well as principal and peer review."
