Teacher's history assignment inspires essay contest, book

A Georgia teacher's class assignment was the inspiration for a nationwide essay contest about American heroes. Middle-school teacher Pamela Ridge asked her students to write about a historical figure they admire. A student who profiled his grandfather -- a World War II veteran -- was motivated by the project to create with his mother the American Veteran Essay Project. Forty of the essays were selected to be published in the book "America's Soldiers: Teens' Tales of Tribute."
