Metrics reveal smart grid learning curve among California utilities

A government requirement that California's three largest utilities present a formal outline of their smart grid strategies is bearing fruit, with mandatory service metrics offering insight into the growing pains utilities are experiencing in the transition to smart meters. Data show that while Southern California Edison has experienced no service interruptions attributed to meter malfunction and San Diego Gas & Electric has seen a relatively small number of disruptions, Pacific Gas & Electric suffered problems with 587 meters because of radio frequency interference, which has since been resolved.
