American Electric Power's Mountaineer Plant in New Haven, W.Va., is one area business experimenting with carbon capture and sequestration technology. Its process uses chilled ammonia to remove carbon dioxide from flue gas. It's a small-scale project that removes about 1.5% of the plant's carbon dioxide, but the company intends to enlarge the project eventually. Meanwhile, a professor at West Virginia University is working on integrated gasification combined cycle, or IGCC -- another way to make coal use cleaner.
