Computational modeling makes for tailored artificial joints

Proper fit to individual patients is necessary to maximize the life of artificial joints, according to this article. That has been a matter of judgment for surgeons in the past but now fit can be calibrated with computation modeling developed at the University of Southampton in the U.K. The MXL project creates a complete 3D musculoskeletal model using data on variations in bone shape and tissue density.
