Don't try to make employees afraid of you

Bosses shouldn't rely on fear to motivate or win the respect of their workers, says Richard Boly, director of the State Department's e-diplomacy division. Rather than inspiring workers, "Fear is a horrible motivator. Maybe it worked when saber-toothed cats were prowling, but not in a professional work environment," he says.
