Don't try to make employees afraid of you

Bosses shouldn't rely on fear to motivate or win the respect of workers, says Richard Boly, director of the State Department's e-diplomacy division. Inspiration should be used, not fear, which "is a horrible motivator," he says. "Maybe it worked when saber-toothed cats were prowling, but not in a professional work environment."
