Industry veterinarians issue report on status of PEDV

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus has afflicted swine in 16 states since it was first identified in the U.S. in April, and a report released Wednesday by industry veterinarians highlights concerns that the virus may hurt U.S. swine production. The infection has been confirmed in 331 older pigs, who suffer gastrointestinal symptoms and poor growth, but it can cause up to 100% mortality in suckling pigs, and absolute mortality data aren't available. PEDV does not cause disease in humans and isn't a food safety concern, according to the USDA, nor does it pose a barrier to trade.
