Researchers study microbe's biofuel potential

Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have identified an abundant microorganism that they say naturally expels vesicles of fatty compounds in seawater. Prochlorococcus uses photosynthesis to produce organic material, then covers that material with an oil-like substance before expelling it, the scientists said. That could be useful in the development of more cost-effective advanced biofuel production methods, the scientists said.
