Golden Gate Bridge engineer is Bay Area transit project fixture

Denis Mulligan used to cross the Golden Gate Bridge often as a child, but he never dreamed that one day he would be its chief engineer. Mulligan, who made a name for himself at Caltrans as the first director of its toll bridge division, left Caltrans in 2001 to head up the complex, $392 million seismic retrofit of the landmark bridge.
