Avandia heart risk study spurs increased reporting of side effects

Reports to the FDA of side effects caused by the use of Avandia for diabetes tripled in the month after a possible link to increased risk of heart problems was revealed. Experts said the spike in reports probably was due to increased awareness caused by the initial report about the GlaxoSmithKline drug, but the delayed reports also indicate flaws in the safety-tracking system.
