Executive order requiring E-Verify creates controversy

Some Democratic lawmakers are criticizing a White House executive order that will require all federal contractors to use the E-Verify system to check the legal status of their workers. They allege that the system rejects workers who should be approved. Meanwhile, a voluntary program that allows all businesses to use E-Verify will expire next month for all businesses except those that receive federal contracts. Legislation that would extend the program has been introduced in the House and in the Senate.
