Banks depend on fair-value rule to boost quarterly results

Banks and other financial institutions have called for the elimination of fair-value accounting rules but now find themselves in the awkward position of embracing the rule to show profit. Bank of America might record a quarterly gain of $1 billion, according to a Citigroup analyst's estimate. Other Wall Street firms are expected to do the same.
