Blood transfusion tops AHRQ list of common hospital procedures

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality found that blood transfusions were performed in 11% of U.S. hospitalizations that involved a medical procedure in 2010, making it the most common hospital procedure. "The rate of hospitalizations with blood transfusion has more than doubled since 1997," according to the report. Researchers analyzed data from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project 2010 Nationwide Inpatient Sample and found that medical procedures were performed in 63% of 39 million hospitalizations.
