FluxCrawler: A crawling robot that could monitor bridge safety

Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Non-destructive Testing in Germany have developed FluxCrawler, a battery-operated crawling robot designed to test "load-bearing cables and tethers of bridges, elevators and cable cars." The small robot, which performs "magnetic flux leakage assessments" and identifies tiny fissures and deeper cracks as it goes, can climb a wire cable of any diameter, "spiralling upward as it monitors the quality of stay cables and wire ropes which, until now, have been difficult and expensive to test adequately."
