MSM activists arrange blood drive to push for right to donate blood

A nationwide blood drive was expected today to protest the FDA's 1977 MSM lifetime blood donation deferral policy. Participants who test negative for HIV intend to go to their blood center and honestly answer a questionnaire that asks if they've had sex with other men since 1977. If a new approach "can assure that blood recipients are not placed at an increased risk of HIV or other transfusion transmitted diseases, FDA will consider a change to its current policy," FDA spokeswoman Morgan Liscinsky said. Reminder: AABB, America's Blood Centers and the American Red Cross recently issued a joint statement about today's "National Gay Blood Drive."
