Commentary: Test score gains don't reflect true learning

Baltimore science teacher John Monahan says the drive to get students to pass state exams has, in the case of his subject area, caused the curriculum to give short shrift to such important concepts as evolution. The "test-driven mania" leads him to wonder whether the real goal of education is to give students understanding in subjects they need to know, or to boost test scores for bragging rights.
