Microsoft to go it alone in battling iPod

Recognizing the need to build market share in the fast-growing digital media market, Microsoft is taking steps to make its own handheld music and video player, instead of partnering with other companies as it usually does with PCs. "Digital media is too important to abdicate the market to Apple," said Phil Leigh, president of market research firm Inside Digital Media.
