Many types of mulch can help gardens grow

Laying down a blanket of mulch in gardens protects the soil from sun and rain, and gardeners can choose organic or synthetic varieties of mulch. Organic mulch can be made from wood chips, grass clippings, sawdust or even newspaper. Synthetic mulch such as black plastic does not decompose and needs to be perforated to allow let air and water into the soil.
