Private domestic demand is not a viable driver of the U.S. economy in the wake of recession, writes Michael Lind. His alternative? Public investment in the nation's infrastructure. For the time being, Lind argues, the U.S., state and local governments need to pick up the slack and create the missing demand for American goods and services through infrastructure investment and social services.
