Judge considers plan to speed protections for some animal species

A pair of deals between wildlife protection groups and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service would set deadlines for the federal government to determine whether to grant "endangered" status to hundreds of species of animals and plants. If U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan signs off on the deals, the government would face deadlines between now and 2018.
