Open-road tolling touted for safety, cost-effectiveness

Some 400 delegates from 20 countries converged on Texas recently to discuss -- and view -- the latest technology for collecting tolls. "The movement to open-road tolling is one of the holy grails of the toll industry; to find a way to allow customers to pay without having to stop and wait," said Patrick D. Jones, CEO of the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association. The North Texas Tollway Authority is converting to an all-electronic system that will free up more money for road construction by eliminating human toll collectors. Currently, half the NTTA budget goes to toll collectors' salaries.
